Józef Halas was born in 1927 in Nowy Sącz. In 1949 he began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw. In 1954 he received a diploma in painting from Prof. Eugeniusz Geppert of the PWSSP in Wroclaw, where in 1954-57 he worked, as a teacher. In 1956 he participated in the creation of the "X" Group. Since 1961 he has been a member of the Wroclaw Group, bringing together artists of different generations. In the 1950s his work was inspired by T. Makowski and P. Klee. In 1954 he obtained a . He has participated in hundreds of exhibitions and has had many solo exhibitions. His works are held by national museums and private collections also abroad.
In the 1960s, the dominant themes in the artist's work were the road, the interior, figures and, above all, the mountains, to which he returns. He is interested in nature. In his compositions, he often chooses a piece of landscape and tries to make it a kind of ideal representation of the whole. In his paintings, he synthesizes shapes, maintains a geometric order, and often uses colors composed of "warm" "earthy" colors.
