Roman Opałka (Abbéville, France 1931 - Rome 2011) , after arriving with his family in Poland, studied at a printing school in Nowa Ruda, after which he took up studies at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Łódź (1949-1950). He continued them at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1950-1956). In his early period, he created painting and drawing series ("Chronomy", 1961-1963, "Phonemes", 1963-1964, "Greek Alphabet", 1965), spatial objects ("Pillowcases", "Integrations", 1964-1966) and graphic series and illustrations. Since 1965, he has been carrying out the program "Counted Images 1-oo ", which is a lifelong project to fill the surfaces of paintings with successive numbers. Already during the implementation of this program, in 1965-67 and 1968-70 he made two graphic series: dedicated to the October Revolution (color lithographs) and "Describing the World" (acidorites), for which he won numerous awards at international exhibitions. Since 1970 he has continued exclusively "Counted Images" in painting ("Details"), drawing ("Cards from Travel") and photographic, video and sound recordings. Since the mid-1970s he has lived in France. He represented Poland at the Venice Biennale in 1995.
